Year 2 had a virtual experience of Thanksgiving. We connected with one of the students grandparents in North Carolina. Mrs Miner explained the history of the celebration and why it is so significant in the American calendar. Ms Chisholm then shared the meaning of many of the table setting items, such as the cornucopia, pumpkins, the Pilgrims and corn candy. The students also discovered the significance of the turkey.
With today's on the verge of hitting 40 degrees celsius, Year 2 had the delight of working with our mobile makerspaces. Students were able to discover the a great deal of creative understanding could be gained by exploring concepts such as circuitry, engineering and mathematics through play. They were enthralled by the idea of being able to create game controllers and the rich mathematical understanding they needed to use them. They played a piano using copper tape, had robots controlled by clapping and created a reaction speed test using Sphero.
The delight on their faces, engagement levels and the wow moments was a great pleasure to watch.
