Birth of the Helicoverpa Armigera

Year 2 discovered the joy of taking ownership of their Helicoverpa Armigera's (caterpillars for short) today. There were many varied and interesting names given examples were "Bob, Sally, Fido and Mac". Each student was given 4 caterpillars, a block of diet and plastic cups. These were placed in egg cartons and are now being stored in a dark room. Weekly students will take them out, record growth and take pictures of their "pets". Student are also keeping a learning journal as part of this project to record reflections and predictions.

Toys Hall of Fame

This afternoon we looked at the characteristic of great toys and what made them engaging and enduring. Students were delighted to see that a stick was on the list of toys inducted into the Hall of Fame because of the creativity it inspires the user to have.

Crazy Head Day Morning

"Crazy Head Day has been so much fun!" This has been the response so far. This morning we have learnt about alliteration throughout the book Possum Magic and have enjoyed sporting activities. Here are somee early photos.

The Way We Were Special Guests

Year 2 were treated to a special guest appearance from "Nanna" and Mrs Maclean. They spoke about things from the past when they were children. They demonstrated how portable grammar phones were used at family gathering and contrasted the sound created from a record to that which we now hear from devices such as iPods. The students were able to experience toys from the past and leart that most toys were made form wood or metal. It was a captivating experience for the student and Year 2 would like to the Nanna and Mrs Maclean for giving of their time, resources and skill.

Descriptive Writing - Favourite Ice-Cream

We have had some amazing descriptive pieces of writing today. This piece caught many teachers attention as the author began to use similes to enhance the writing and draw parallels to something else. Students had to write a "Description of their Favourite Ice-cream".

"My favourite Ice-cream is choc chip. It tastes like mint and choc chip ice-cream and it is the best. How good? I'll tell you. It looks like it is as green as the grass, it has little bits of chocolate lollies in it and it is freezing cold"

Watch it Grow - The Metamorphosis of Helicoverpa Armigera

Year 2 is studying a unit called "Watch it grow" which is about change in animals and humans. As part of our scientific study, we will be observing the life cycle of Helicoperva Armigera.

This afternoon, we made predictions about how this might occur by answering the following questions:

1. What will the eggs turn into?
2. How long before the eggs hatch?
3. What will they eat?
4. How will we store the the Helicoperva Armigera?

The answers were astounding and varied. It was amazing to see the creativity and imagery of the children's minds.

We also discussed how frustrating it was to be studying something so unknown. We came to the conclusion that science is all about making predictions, experimenting, and making mistakes, in order to come up with some conclusive findings.

If you are game, you might like to predict the answers to these questions with your children. They will delight in being able to play with you in this way.

After our investigation and prediction, we watched a video that explained the whole process and compared them to our original predictions which was met with much surprise and excitement.

Catalyst - The Way We Were Problem Based Learning.

Today we continued learning about our Inaburra Story. We were introduced to a former member of staff and Deputy Principal, Mr Moir. We looked at his journey from Inaburra to his present position as Principal at Katoke School, Tanzania. This school, like Inaburra has an amazing heritage although it is located in an impoverished part of Africa. 
Students were challenged with the following problem "You are a toy designer hoping to launch the next great toy that will be popular for years to come in the community of Katoke, Tanzania, Africa.  What direction should you take in the design of this toy, and why will children be drawn to it?" From this problem they formed groups and were assigned the roles of spokesperson, group leader and scribe.
The ideas generated by the students were fascinating and produced a large amount of enthusiastic and animated discussion, "what type of toy would I create if I could make one?" "How can I create a toy without batteries as they may not have the money to replace the batteries?" It will be an interesting conversation to continue.

The Zoo by Anthony Browne

2H have been increasingly fascinated with the hidden messages conveyed through images. Many of our students were amazed by the detail and meanings embedded into Anthony Brownes images. The comment "is the zoo for people or animals" was a deep insight made by the mother in the story and richly discussed by the students. The discrepancy between the images and the text was discovered and drew out the comment, "this is like on the ads on TV, they show an image but the words are saying different things".

This week we have been inspired by Mem Fox's Koala Lou. Students have been focusing on the use of descriptive language (adjectives) to enhance the picture created in the mind of their readers. The following is a worksample of one of the students.

We have been studying Julia Donaldson's book the Gruffalo and Margaret Wild's The Fox. Student have been immensely engaged with the visual aspects of creative arts and Literacy, identifying the visual elements of images such as the foreground, background, the focal point and the lines of vertex.

Numbers to 100 Maths Activities

Our focus this week in Mathis is Numbers to 100. In maths groups today we played activities that reinforce the locations of numbers within the hundreds chart. Student looked at place value tens and ones and created their own hundreds charts.
