Interactive Narrative Writing

Over the past few weeks Year 2 have been working away at becoming published writers. Over the last two days we have been converting our narratives into interactive books using the app book creator.

Students have been immensely engaged with this writing process. Over the coming weeks I hope to make these available through our library blog for viewing in iBooks and e-readers.

Week 3 update

It has been such a massive week of learning in Year 2. This week started with Michael Salmon coming to speak with the boys about writing and illustrating narratives. While our girls also had a special guest Hayley Shanks along with Mrs Shanks and a group of mothers come and teach them how to created magnificent celebration food.

We have been looking this week at the many different celebrations conducted around the world both in Library and in class and have finished off looking at "Time" for the year.

Later in the week we started our writers workshop where students were given the task of creating interactive iBooks. Currently these are in draft stage; however, the plan is to release the library of these later this term. I am impressed with the skill and creativity being displayed both in the narrative and the illustrations.

Today all students have been given their username letters, this will allow student access to both their email and drives where their files are kept. If you have any queries please come and speak with me about this.

Please remember the Public Speaking Competition is next week.

Welcome to Week 2

As we slide into Week 2, I wanted to inform you of the major areas of study for Year 2 this Term. Our big theme we are looking at is Celebrations. This will take a different form in each subject; however, leading into Christmas it is appropriate.

In English we are conducting an Author Study of Graham Base's work check out his website to learn more. We will be focusing on in our writing time Narratives and we hope to publish a library of interactive books by the end of the term.

This week in Maths we are revisiting Whole Number and Money. We will look at place value and trading items for sale.

Welcome to Term 4!

We hope and pray you had a wonderful and refreshing holiday. It was lovely to see the children this morning and hear about their adventures during the break. They have written a short recount of some of their favourite memories.

Today, with your generous contributions, 2S and 2H were able to fill 10 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Thank you!

The shoeboxes will be picked up early next week. If you and your family would like to fill one of your own, we still have some boxes available, but they would need to be returned by Monday.

During Weeks 2 and 3, Year 2 will be presenting their book reviews. We have placed a link to some sample book reviews done by children under the English Talking and Listening tab above. It might be helpful for the students to have a look at these and also use a graphic organiser to assist their planning. We have been talking about book reviews and will be completing written reviews in class.

ASSEMBLY INVITATION! On Friday of Week 2 (17th October) at 11am, Year 2 will be presenting an assembly item in the PAC. We'd love you to join us and hear us sing a song about Loving One Another. The children might like to have a practise of the song, they can find the link below. Looking forward to a busy and exciting term!

Determined to Change Their World and Help Others

This is a short video Zoeya created as she has been inspired to support children less fortunate than herself. Please be encouraged and never under-estimate the power of a child and the influence they have to change their world. It is different to Operation Christmas Child; however, it has similar motivation. It is nice to know we are shaping engaged and inspired global citizens.

Telling Time

This week we are looking at time in Maths. Today we enjoyed playing with our training clocks. For lessons and enrichment activities please view the Maths tab at the top of the page then scroll down to the time section.

As you are probably aware we won't have much spare time this week as we have the Father's Day stall, sport and music photos and an excursion this week. As a result there is not any spelling homework; however, students continue to have Mathletics and presentation preparation. This is also Year 2 second last week to finish their mine craft transport systems for the Land of a Thousand Rainbows. We are planning a gallery walk through and presentation to the Mayor and parents in week 9.

Zoeya's Personal Interest Project - Transport

The following video is Zoeya's personal interest project inspired by Year 2's study of Transport. Well done!

Poem in my Pocket

Poetry can energise a classroom - yet so many students have negative associations with it. The world of poetry is so open. It is inclusive and gives you a bear hug (or an otter wink) whenever you even attempt to embrace it. Poetry is not always beautiful like sparkly dolphin stickers or an oversized handsome poster, but it is often majestic.

In response to this the school decided we would do 'something special' on the Literacy aspect of Literacy and Numeracy week. Each student was asked to either write a poem or find a poem and have it placed in they pocket. They then recited these to other students from other grades with vigor and enthusiasm. It was something truly amazing.

Minecraft Transport Creations - Week 2 Update

I have been impressed with the level of skill and motivation displayed during this task. There has been some amazing conversations including alternate forms of powering the transport such as using renewable sources. The following video is a walk through of the Island of a Thousand Rainbows thus far.

Week 6 Homework

This week hopefully will be a little quieter than last week; however, it is National Literacy and Numeracy week.

Week 5 - A Very Busy Week

This week though it is wet is still going to be a busy week. Unfortunately due to the significant precipitation falling from the skies our transport excursion to the City this Thursday has been postponed until the 4th of September. Thankfully the rain has not damped Year 2 enthusiasm for designing the transport system for the Land of a Thousand Rainbows. We will be starting to create this in mine-craft later this week. The students of Year 2 have completed their training exercises and are ready for job! They have written their applications to the Lord Mayor of the Island and he has agreed to employ the students' services.

We shall continue our Novel study of Edward Tullane, we will be identifying the cause and effects of Edwards dilemmas, looking at the sequence of event thus far and the elements of a story specifically focusing on the plot. During Maths we are concentrating on 2D shapes and angles.

This Friday as part of book week, we get to dress up as our favourite book characters and to bring the cakes for cake day.

Could I also make the request that student bring with them either head phones or ear buds to attach to the computers. This is to avoid students sharing. Finally, as I am sure you are now aware, we don't have spelling homework this week due to the book week celebrations. I am looking forward to an exciting week of learning.

Day 2 as a Town Planner - Year 2 Minecraft Houses

Day 2 training as a town planner for the Land of a Thousand Rainbows could be declared a success. Below is a walk through of the houses built and designed in Minecraft by our student. As you can see the results are impressive. Training is now complete!

Next week we begin teaming up with our other town planners to map out and design where our transport systems will constructed on the island.

Town Planner Day 2 Training Task - Survival House Building

The following video is Year 2's Town Planners day 2 training task for the Land of a Thousand Rainbows. Remember today you have limited resources. As you are building use things wisely!

Day 1 as a Town Planner

This is a short video about our first day as Town Planners for The Island of a Thousand Rainbows. Our focus was building skills and testing design ideas.

The students are looking forward to tomorrow's challenge of building in a flat world with limited resources. There will need to be plenty of planning, communication and team work to be successful.

Week 4 Homework

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend. This week is a busy week with Grandparents Day Assembly of Tuesday and Band Camp on Thursday and Friday.

This week in Maths Year 2 will be focusing on Multiplication. In the past we have been looking more at groups of items, skip counting and multiplication as repeated addition, where now we will be identifying the repetitive pattern of 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. The following is a downloadable Multiplication Table 0 - 12.

During English this week we will continue with our Novel Study of Edward Tullane reading chapters 4 and 5. We will be identifying the wh questions (Who, What and When) of Pelligina's Story and Making connections between what we have read in the book and our own personal journey.

We will dig deeper (sorry for the pun) into our Transport unit this week. Last week Mr Morris presented a real world example and his demonstration of his use of technology including 3D modelling in architecture and engineering. Student building on this will visit The Land of a Thousand Rainbows using Minecraft. We have asked students to familiarise themselves with this program as part of their homework along with researching a form of Air Transport. This can be done by watching a few youtube videos, googling Air Transport and comparing the images or viewing a small range few websites. The task is designed to create a general body of knowledge about Air Transport.

The following is a link to this weeks homework.

Congratulations MR and MRS Bessell

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Bessell on the Birth of their beautiful baby girl Emma Jayne Bessell. She is just 45cm long and 1.875kg in weight. Mum and bub are both doing very well. Emma Jayne will be staying in the special care unit for the next two weeks while she gains a little more body mass. We look forward to seeing them soon.

The Force of Water

Today Year 2 experienced the force of water. We were able to experiment what causes objects to either sink or float. This understand will be essential for students who choose to design sea based transport for The Land of a Thousand Rainbows.

Monday, 4 August 2014

Week 3 Homework

This week we are looking forward to a big week of learning. Last week students we given the task of writing a persuasive piece of writing. This was designed to provide students with the opportunity to convince the Mayor of The Land of a Thousand Rainbows to have them on his Town Planning Team. The ideas and excitement around this writing was encouraging. This week we will look at some of the transport system which may be appropriate for the island before next week taking our first excursion into the minecraft world to discover the islands.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at different forms of persuasive writing and features of these. This week for homework we have asked the students to craft a Statement of Position. This means a short 2-3 sentence introduction stating what they believe.

Students have also been asked to conduct research on one form of Sea Transport. This can be done by student watching a few videos on youtube, googling Sea Transport in images then comparing and contrasting the vessels, viewing a small range of websites or even talking to parents about their experience and use of water transport. This task is designed to expose students to a general body of knowledge allowing them to explore, discover interesting facts and make connections. An example overheard today was one students was having a discussion trying to decided with others which category a hovercraft would fit into sea, land or air transport.

Week 3 Homework

We hope you have a wonderful week, please make sure you wish Mrs Durham the best for her move to QLD as Friday is her last day.
